Sure is.  When you put the wrench on the battery cable 
and start loosening it, you may swing the wrench too 
far and touch the other end of it to some bare metal.
If the wrench is on the positive cable you have now 
shorted the battery's positive post to ground causing 
(at least) big sparks.  If the wrench was on the negative 
post shorting it to ground does nothing as it is already 
connected to ground.

Of course the rules change on positive ground (as in 
old GMCs) systems.

This brings up an interesting question I've had for years.
Why does the repair manual allways tell you to disconnect the negetive    
lead from the battery when making repairs?  Is there some reason
disconnecting the negative leads is better than disconnecting the
positive?
