A while ago, someone was asking about a good how-to book for body and paint
work. I found a very good book recently on painting, called Boyd
Coddington's How to Paint Your Hot Rod, by Timothy Remus, ISBN
0-87938-942-7.
I liked it because it is up to date in its treatment of modern paint types.
Most older texts spend lots of time on laquer, which is almost unavailable
in the US now. This text does talk about laquer, but spends more time on
acrylic enamels and urethanes, as well as the various types of primer,
sealers and body filler now available.
There are basic instructions on how to prepare the metal and primer
surfaces, and how to lay down and color sand top coats. It then goes on to
talk about candy and pearl techniques, graphics, painting frames, engines
and pinstripes. Lots of pictures, and very readable at exactly 150 pages.
It doesn't spend much time on body work. There is a companion work,
probably called Boyd Coddington's How to Bang the Dents Out of Your Hot
Rod, or something like that. I found an old 60s era trade school textbook,
which was good for working on 50s sheet metal. Lots of the modern
techniques don't apply to our trucks.

Grant S.
