i have a 52 suburban that also has a 292 and auto trans    in in fact has the 
stock 3 speed column shifter that works properly for the auto trans   i will 
look at it this weekend and try to give you some ideas   also, the battery is 
mounted under the hood at the back of the passenger side   will send you a 
photo if needed
