Andy,
All 305's were not created equally.... 78'-82' had bad cams from the
factory. The lobes wore quickly, giving them a bad rap. Hot Rod (within the
last couple of years) did a buildup of a hi-performance 305. The aftermarket
stuff for the small block Chevy will work on the 283, 302(Chevy v8), 305,
307, 327, 350 and the odd guy 400.
I agree with Jon on one point the venerable small block Chevy IS the 350,
and the are "a dime a dozen" so if your looking get a 350 but if you already
have the 305 you can use it too. I run dual quad 283's in my trucks (good
enough for corvette's good enough for me)

Andy,
The 305 was unreliable. If you have to purchase an engine, get a 350. All
the Chevy small blocks are the same size so a 350 shouldn't create a
mounting problem. Since so manu 350's were made, there are lots of parts
in the junk yard and new parts are cheap. Look up the prices of a few
engine parts, such as an Edelbrock intake and some pistons to see some of
the differences. No matter what source you go to, they will ALL have 350
parts. As an added bonus, you get 45 more cubic inches and more power in
the same engine space.

Hey all,
I was looking at swapping in a v8 engine to replace my 216. I'm going with
the S-10 frame, and I have found a site that makes motor mounts and has
books for S-10 v8 conversions. The specific engine is a 305 from a 79
Malibu. I have heard that that is a "bad" year for engines. What does
"bad" mean? I don't know much a bout engines, so try to keep the responses
relatively simple.
By the way, to all of those who asked my about the s-10 frames, you
should have gotten a chart from me. If you didn't email me off list and
I'll send it again.
Thanks,
Andy Johns
