Actually, what you want is a good continuous duty DC motor such as a
Prestolite or ADC forklift or pump motor. They produce plenty of power,
ans can be "rodded" sucessfully. On our E-boats we ran 48v Prestolites at
144v to produce about 155 hp. There is now an Electric drag organization,
NEDRA, affiliated with NHRA, where the current electric record is 8.4 sec
at 149 mph. It's easier than you think.
