Dan,

    Yes, they go in from the inside of the pan, through the main bearing
cap, cover plate, and timing cover, where they are secured by lock nuts. I
think this was designed by the same sadist that put the two bellhousing
bolts where they cannot be removed without pulling off the flywheel.

    It's a simple matter while the engine is out, to tap the front main
bearing cap for 3/8" NC threads, enlarge the timing gear holes to 25/32" and
install 3/8" cap screws from the opposite direction. Then, you don't have to
remove the pan to get the timing cover off, should you ever want to change
camshafts.
