The message below is correct, the 6V starter will just spin faster on 12V.

Or, if you have the engine out (or trans out), just knock off the flywheel
ring and replace it with a 55 or newer one (I think up to '61).  The rings
are the same diameter, large or small flywheel).  Then just use a 12V
starter (and the foot starter still works the same).

I was told by the owner of the the company that I used when I overhauled
my starter that if I ever converted over to 12 volt the 6 volt starter
would work fine.  He even told me that they often use 6 volt brushes on
12 volt starters when they want to make them heavy duty.
