In most stretchy spring replacements i use a pair of 7-WR vice grips. They have knurls right at the very tip. Clamp them on the straight part near the hook. Then find a lace just a couple inches away to put the tip of a beefy screwdriver. levering with the screwdriver and using the vice grips as a fulcrum will yeild amazing control.
