Billionaire blows $17M on cruise party
LONDON b Hans Rausing, Britainbs second richest man, blew a cool 12
million
pounds ($17.5 million) on a party for 600 guests aboard a luxury liner,
newspapers reported on Thursday.
Worth an estimated 4.5 billion pounds, the food-packaging heir b who has had
a reputation for watching his pennies - treated guests to a week of luxury
living and exclusive entertainment, including a concert on Tuesday by British
pop legend Elton John.
The Independent newspaper said the reason for the extravagant party was
unclear. The 76-year-oldbs birthday is in March.
It added that the celebration reached its climax on Wednesday at the Sicilian
tourist resort of Taormina, where Rausing booked a 2,000-year-old Greek
amphitheater for a performance of a hit London West End show.
The newspaper said that Rausing was not previously known for his generosity

x it wrote that he drove a modest Morris Minor car, wore a cheap Timex watch
and claimed old age pensioner rates to buy tickets.
Rausing sold his stake in Sweden-based food packaging giant Tetra Pak to his
brother seven years ago.
His fortune is second only in Britain to that of the Duke of Westminster,
whose real estate portfolio is worth an estimated 4.7 billion pounds.
