Thank you Tcherek,
Good to hear from you again. I did check with Morgan Spares about the compl=
ete interior kits. I wanted to see if I could make a correct seat back and b=
ases in order to possibly save enough to pay for this new ivory Brooklands s=
teering wheel. =20
All the best,

over some are bent in such a way to give<br class=3D"">that great "old sofa"=
look to the backrest when it is in the car.<br class=3D"">I would STRONGLY s=
uggest that if your back rest is shot, you either replace<br class=3D"">it w=
ith bucket seats or look for a good used back rest at a swap meet.<br class=3D=
""><br class=3D"">However, If you watch Norm Abrams regularly and you are ei=
ther desperate or<br class=3D"">brave enough to attempt to make a replica - h=
ere are the measurements and<br class=3D"">materials you will need.<br class=
=3D"">Begin with a piece of quarter inch Luan board. It should measure 44'" W=
ide<br class=3D"">by 21 & 3/4" deep.<br class=3D"">Measuring from left t=
o right, (along the long side) move the tape in 1 &<br class=3D"">1/2" f=
rom the left side and make a mark. Then, from that mark, measure 41"<br clas=
s=3D"">(this accomodates the notch either side at the top of the back rest,&=
nbsp; for<br class=3D"">the hood frame.) This notch extends down from the to=
p, 4 & 1/4" each side in<br class=3D"">a slight curve.<br class=3D"">The=
overall depth of the backrest is 21 & 3/4". Having marked for the notch=
<br class=3D"">at the top, measure from the very top of the backrest down th=
e right side 17<br class=3D"">&1/2" and make a mark. (You will now begin=
to mark the bottom cut out, where<br class=3D"">it bridges the leaf springs=
and sits on the sills). Measure in 4", down 1 &<br class=3D"">1/2", the=
n in 3", and down 2" to the bottom of the backrest. The total width<br class=
=3D"">of this notch should be 7 & 1/2". Now, measure in from the r=
ight side edge<br class=3D"">(not from the notch) 19" and put a mark.<br cla=
ss=3D"">Mirror the above measurements for the two notches on the left side o=
f the<br class=3D"">back.<br class=3D"">At the bottom, in the middle you sho=
uld end up with two marks about 6"<br class=3D"">apart, this is where the cu=
t out will be for the prop shaft tunnel. It<br class=3D"">should be about 6 &=
amp; 1/2" high, but it tapers. The best thing to do is set<br class=3D"">you=
r prop shaft tunnel on the back rest and use it as a template, you'll get<br=
class=3D"">a much more accurate cut, but remember not to make it taller tha=
n 7".<br class=3D"">At this stage you should not have made any cuts - everyt=
hing should just be<br class=3D"">marked though on the Luan board.<br class=3D=
"">The next step is to take some 1/2" x 3" stock. (you could use 1/2" ply cu=
t<br class=3D"">3" wide). You will need two pieces 38 1/2" long for the top r=
ail and the<br class=3D"">upper base rail, two pieces 22" long for the side r=
ails, one piece 12" long<br class=3D"">for the center rail, one piece cut 7"=
wide x 38 & 1/2" long for the lower<br class=3D"">base rail.<br class=3D=
"">Now, turn your Luan back rest over on the floor so that the markings you<=
br class=3D"">made earlier are facing down. Next lay out your pre cut length=
s of 1/2" ply<br class=3D"">as follows:<br class=3D"">First place your two s=
ide rails on the outside edges either side, then place<br class=3D"">the 7" w=
ide base rail horizontally between them at the very bottom, directly<br clas=
s=3D"">above that place the upper base rail and then place the top rail at t=
he top<br class=3D"">edge. Finally figure and mark the center point of the t=
op and upper base<br class=3D"">rail out, mark it and place the 12" center r=
ail vertically between these two<br class=3D"">points. You now have your bas=
ic frame laid out. You need to attach these<br class=3D"">frame pieces to th=
e Luan. I would suggest (now you know how it should look)<br class=3D"">remo=
ving them and re-laying them out on the floor in front of you, then<br class=
=3D"">place the Luan board on top (with your markings facing up) and nail th=
rough<br class=3D"">the Luan into the ply wood frame rails, a little glue wo=
uldn't hurt.<br class=3D"">YOU ARE ALMOST FINISHED!<br class=3D"">Once the f=
rame pieces have been nailed to the Luan and the glue has dried,<br class=3D=
"">take a plane and knock a 45 degree bevel top frame rail, but not so deep<=
br class=3D"">that you cut into the Luan. Then, with a jig saw, cut out area=
s we marked<br class=3D"">earlier.<br class=3D"">Once again lay the back res=
t on the floor, frame side up, as we have two<br class=3D"">more pieces of w=
ood to add. These strengtheners are 23 & 1/2" long, 1 & 1/2"<br clas=
s=3D"">wide by 1" deep. They run top to bottom, on their edge, at a slight d=
iagonal<br class=3D"">beginning, (measuring along the top of the backrest)&n=
bsp; 4" in from the hood<br class=3D"">bow notch on either side - to just in=
side the notch we cut out for the leaf<br class=3D"">spring shackle. You wil=
l see once you lay these on your backrest that you<br class=3D"">will have t=
o notch out these strengtheners so they attach to the Luan in<br class=3D"">=
some places and frame in others. These pieces have a 45 degree bevel on ALL<=
br class=3D"">FOUR long edges that will be inside the seat back. In addition=
the ends are<br class=3D"">cut at 45 degrees so that they taper to create a=
wedge (2 - 2 1/2" long)<br class=3D"">towards the top and bottom of the sea=
t. These pieces are then attached to<br class=3D"">the back rest with screws=
from behind.<br class=3D"">There are just two more things you have to do. I=
n the square area of Luan<br class=3D"">that you now see either side of the c=
enter rail, drill a 1" air hole in the<br class=3D"">middle. Finally, sand a=
ll the outside edges so there is nothing that will<br class=3D"">rip you new=
leather when it's applied.<br class=3D"">THAT'S IT!!!! You now have a Morga=
n back rest!<br class=3D""><br class=3D"">You should be able to re-use the s=
prings from your old back rest. As I<br class=3D"">mentioned earlier, there a=
re 19 ! The two side rails get three large ones<br class=3D"">each as does t=
he center rail, the top row of the larger ones are bent down.<br class=3D"">=
The square Luan section on each side get five small springs each, in a<br cl=
