I had the same problem, and had them sand blasted to the bare metal - It
looked so good that I then just had them clear-coated to the natural
aluminum. It's a little bit darker than the painted silver, but gives a
great contrast to the car's finish - Plus, it's now smooth and makes
cleaning a lot easier...
