The pedal should return immediately, regardless of what the actual clutch is
doing, *if* it has it's own return spring like the MGB, but there should
also be a return spring inside the master. If this didn't happen you
wouldn't be able to bleed the clutch hydraulics (or the brakes) using the
pedal.
