That's why Control Data Corp had their 405 card reader equipped with photo
cells, which "read" the holes.
The reader was able to read 2,000 cars per minute and were very reliable!
Massive equipment it was!

The CDC 415 card punch had metal brushes as check method for the punched
holes.
Most failing parts were .... the brushes.
