These are much more reasonably priced, and have an
omni-directional array that *seems* like it would solve the
directionality and brightness issues. They fit the existing sockets.
Like all LED lights, you would need to use an electronic flasher rather
than a thermal flasher, but other than that, they seem like drop ins,
yes?
But as to the legality question, well, you are on your own.

looking for a problem, and in the UK at least it is illegal to retrofit
