Oliver,
I would remove the radiator. If you choose not to remove it, place a piece
of cardboard in front of the radiator to protect it and your knuckles.
Years ago when I did this job on my first car (a Buick), a wrench slipped
and punctured the radiator.
I also have a 1973 and years ago I purchased a replacement water pump with
an aluminum housing. On my car the water pump housing has an appendage that
the alternator attaches to. Very shortly after replacement the appendage
snapped and I lost this mounting point for the alternator. I ended up have
to do the job again using a steel water pump. My recommendation, if you car
is set up like mine, make sure the housing of the replacement is steel.
John
