Some eras of engine are more susceptible than others.  Low grade fuel, too
high an idle speed, carbonised combustion chamber (although this is
virtually unknown with modern fuels), combustion chamber hot-spots, or a
too-hot engine can all make it worse.  Retarded or over-advanced timing as
well as cooling system problems will contribute to a too-hot engine.  Don't
allow it to do it as the engine can run backwards, switch off in 4th gear
and stall it on the clutch until you fix it properly, the factory anti-runon
system as fitted to North American spec MGBs from 1972/3 completely cures
it.
