Tom,
I am not aware of a particularly good way. Brake cleaner followed by
wiping, then detergent and hot water, followed by brake cleaner, etc will
work eventually, but you probably don't want to use brake cleaner where
it can soften paint. Paint thinner will not soften old paint unless
left on the surface a long time. Detergent doesn't work especially
effectively on silicone, but it seems to be the best of available poor
choices. Getting rid of silicone residue is a problem for painters, who
use different cleaners and preparation agents from paint stores. You
might call a local auto paint store to see if they have something that
will help. Whatever you use, employ many clean rags, and consider them to
be silicone-contaminated after use.
