My trick is to use a small pair of vise grips (because they have a width of
maybe 3/8" or thereabouts). The key is to get a grip of the metal just
outside of the balljoint. With vise grips clamped on the collar or the
metal part between collar and ball joint plus a 24 hour or so soaking of
the nut with PB Blaster or similar, the nut can then be loosened. Although
in one case, I recall having to cut/split the nut and then replace the
whole link piece which was not very expensive.
