Aaaargh! What is inside a coil is completely immaterial, it is either a 12v
coil that doesn't need an external ballast or a 6v coil which does (on an
MGB at any rate), and the difference is in the primary resistance. Talk of
internal ballast only causes confusion. I have opened up a dead 12v Lucas
coil from a 60s BL car just out of interest and found nothing inside but
miles of wire on a core. Which isn't to say that 12v coils from other
sources or eras are the same.
