We used to ceramic coated piston tops in high-boost
turbocharged applications when I was at AutoThority,
and they worked pretty well. The same is true for
thermal coatings on headers, and low-friction coating
on piston skirts.
But although things might have improved over the last
six or seven years, it was always pretty much
splitting hairs. I mean, it's not like we could
actually tune differently for a coated engine or
anything. The rule of thumb was always: "Spend only
your LAST dollars on coatings."
It was the thing to do if you had already done
everything else, or if money was truly no object. Did
they work? Yeah, I suppose. But not so much that
they were worth mortgaging the house for.
Just my $0.02.
