Don, the bumpers seem pretty much in line, but I am really surprised about
the costs of the smaller hinge and handle type bits, I would have expected
them to be much cheaper. I guess that means the cost is in the labor not in
the coverage. One thing I was taught that has worked extremely well for me
is buffing the old chrome. I bought a couple of bits from a shop a few
years ago. They went back, selected used bits that I would have passed over
at a swap meet buffed them, and presto chango, new looking parts. Shortly
after that I bought a buffing wheel for my grinder. I would suggest you get
a soft wheel some polishing compound and a medium cutting compound, I found
it all at Lowes. I have mine mounted on a $40 Delta 1/2 or 2/4 horse
grinder. At the worst you will spend some time and $20, but at the rates
you list you might save 10 times that if even one part is saved. IME
buffing will take out 99% of the defects. The only thing that it doesn't
help are deep pits. I'd love to get one of those 3' wide grinders to work
on for maneuverability but have never wanted to spend the $$$. On a
standard grinder it sometimes takes some creativity to reach all of the
surfaces but I haven't yet run into anything that I couldn't find a way to
buff. The luggage rack might be such a beast though. Best of luck.
