The answer is yes - it will fit.  The only difference in early and late 4 
synchro O/D gearboxes is the placement of the switch, and possibly the use 
of an oil level dipstick.  To change from standard to O/D you may need to 
change the length of your driveshaft, and put in a little wiring (and 
maybe a relay), everything else should come out in a wash by a wholesale 
trans change.  There could also be a slight speedo error after the 
conversion.  There were probably 5 different mounting systems for the 
trans, but they are all interchangable, and there should be two sets of 
captive nuts in the floor to accept the mounting bracket location (for 
either std. or O/D box).  Well, at least there were on early cars, they 
may have standardized that location on later cars.

As is brought up many times - it is not effective to try to fit an 
overdrive unit to a non-overdrive transmission - you would really need to 
replace the entire gearbox with an overdrive gearbox.
