According to the Leyland Workshop Manual 71-model year cars did have four
browns on the solenoid - one to the fusebox and starter relay, one to the
lights, ignition and hazard flasher, and two to the alternator - one thick
and one thin. The thick wire was the main charging wire and the thin was a
'sense' wire for the voltage regulator, discarded for the 72-model year and
later. If the dangling brown is live you should insulate it at the very
least, but probably better to connect it to the solenoid.
