Must be a T type or an early Spridget.  I've found that the route
the cable takes makes a difference, even with new ones, too many
S bends etc.  Wiggle the cable around under the dash and see if
it settles down in a different position.  I have the solution to
the oozing tach drive.  Read my article a year or so back in the
"TSO".
