Personally, I would not recommend lacquer. It is illegal now in
several states due, I believe, its VOCs. On a more practical level, it
is a fragile paint,  although original to most of our old crates. When
it was time for the Es paint, I opted for an urethane enamel, I spent
hours color blocking it and the painter then buffed it. Looks like
lacquer, but with the easy care and touch up of more modern paint.
