Nubbins? Or Gubbins, Lawrie being an ex-pat Brit? 'Gubbins' was the real
name of a British Major in WWII who was a member of the organisation that
came up with all sorts of mechanical trickery to try and cause mayhem to the
enemy, like the exploding rat. After the war the word was used to describe
any mechanical assembly that didn't have a formal name, much like 'Gizmo'.
Now where did that come from?
