Sounds like it was way too rich (plugs black and wet with gas), could be
dirt blocking the float valve/s.  If you don't have the smog stuff this
causes fuel to be dumped on the floor, but with the smog kit it goes into
the charcoal cannister, I believe.  Did you really mean 'Gas was in float'?
It should be in the float chamber but not in the float, otherwise the float
won't - float, that is, and cause flooding and a rich mixture.  I am pretty
sure it is impossible for an original SU to suddenly start putting out too
much pressure, but as for an after-market pump ... who knows?

BTW, a correctly adjusted choke should be capable of being pulled out about
1/4" to give a fast idle of 1500 rpm when warm before any enrichening of the
mixture takes place.  You could use this to try and keep the engine running
without doing a jig on the pedals.
