A blockage under the needle valve preventing it from seating. One way to
clear the blockage in an emergency is to rap on the outside of the float
chamber with a smallish spanner (wrench). A few raps will probably dislodge
the material and stop the fuel overflowing. But definitely install an inline
filter as another lister recommended. You could also be up for a gas tank
removal/etch etc if it's really bad.
