The overdrives on our LBC's are amazingly stout. They are sensitive to a
few things. The oil level must be maintained, and the oil needs to be
clean. There is a filter screen which should be cleaned at every oil
change.
The overdrive can be left on all the time. You will be rewarded with
drastically reduced acceleration in thrid and fourth, and as has been
noted, a tendency to over-rev the engine if your not careful on the 3-2
downshift. Overdrive third is about the same ratio as straight fourth -
now visualize the 4-2 downshift, and you'll understand. The overdrive will
be damaged heavily if you reverse the car with the overdrive engaged. The
design of it's circuit feed to the solenid is such that this won't happen,
and so long as it is bodged, you needn't worry. A lockout switch (same
part # as the reverse light switch btw), prevents the overdrive from being
powered except when in 3/4.
HOW YOU USE IT IS LARGELY OPERATOR PREFERENCE. Keep the system properly
lubricated, the filter clean, and the wiring "correct", and the rest will
take care of itself.

Chris Delling
