Jerry, the easy answer is to split the brass nut and buy replacements!

I am serious, I have been through this 3 times on three different cars and only 
managed to recover one nut. They are about $3 a piece for the replacements, so 
the job costs $10 and no busted knuckles or damaged paintwork.
