  From the START position only?

  It makes sense if you get a spark going to off from on, that
has the effect of opening the points.

  If you ALSO got a spark when going to the on position
from the start position, that makes sense in a ballasted
car, because the coil voltage would get suddenly cut.

  But does it happen when going from on to off?

  If not, it's starting to smell like a ballast problem. The
usual symptom of this is that the car will start but
die as soon as you take the key off start. This doesn't
really agree with your earlier statements though.

  The whole system is not that complex, stick with it.
