Since we're on the subject, what is the highest compression ratio I
could run on a freshly-rebuilt engine using 93 octane pump gas? My
car never pings now, even when I do stupid things with the timing,
and I usually alternate between 89 and 93 at the local Chevron.
Moss's ad for the crossflow heads say that with flat-top
pistons, you'll get 11:1 CR, but I don't know what kind of gas you'd
need. I'm not interested in the Xflow head, because it seems like
too much buck for not enough bang, after buying the head, manifold,
and heater valve, not to mention the fact that I wouldn't want to
cripple that head with my Weber 32/36 downdraft, but when an engine
rebuild becomes necessary, I wouldn't mind going with one of the 2.0
litre kits.
I have a steady supply of 100 octane lo-lead at the
squadron's fueling station, but would rather stick to 93 so I could
actually go more than 125 miles from home without retarding the
timing.
