The grease will prevent the splines from "galling" which is why they
fail. There is always some movement in the splines, enough to scare the
heck out of you. As suggested keep them lubed. Check the splines once
in a while, they should have a rounded top. If the spline top is sharp
they are worn. It doesn't take much for them to fold over, with
interesting consequences.
Silicone is very handy for sealing the spokes at the hub. This
prevents water from entering and also stops the nice new grease you
added from flinging down the spokes.
