Say what?! Scott, those carriers were never diesel powered, they were oil
burner
boilers. The onboard diesels are auxiliary and emergency power generators,
installed on both oil burner and nuke carriers.

Batteries are *far* older then the internal combustion engine.

There is no indication of them getting cheaper. In fact, historically, they
have gotten
far more expensive.
