Can't see that would make much difference.  If the stat isn't opening fast 
enough, or if there is insufficient coolant flowing through the radiator for 
any other reason, even with the fans running the engine is going to 
overheat.  Hot spots is another issue altogether, the sensor is sitting in 
coolant at one position (wherever that may be) and hence is only sensing the 
average coolant temperature passing it at that time.
