Part of the problem with using white LEDs behind a red lens is that modern
white LEDs are actually blue, violet or ultraviolet LEDs with a fluorescent
slug over top of them. The short-wavelength light from the LED excites the
fluorescent material, which then radiates in the visible part of the
spectrum, producing 'white' light with a bit of a blue cast to it. Putting
that behind a red lens then throws away about 90% of the effective
radiation, because the blue light and everything except for the red and
nearly-red components will get absorbed by the lens.

Pure red LEDs generate red light only, and all of it will pass through the
taillight lens, with no wasted energy. Red LEDs will be MUCH better than
white LEDs, and they are definitely brighter than the equivalent
incandescent bulb especially if you're directly behind them.

Best regards,
Theo
