It was to do with accounting, keeping them separate was beneficial, possibly
a new venture not being allowed to bring down the more established one if it
bombed, also profits were taxed separately which probably resulted in a
saving, their being two tax-free allowances, and with stepped taxation a
higher total would incur a higher tax rate.
