If the block is from Rover, the engine number is viewable from above.  On the
moderately early engines (after 1974) the serial number is near the dipstick;
on later engines it's near the bellhousing.  Some good data is available at

at www.rover-v8.co.uk/body_data1.htm.  The David Hardcastle book I mentioned,
"Tuning Rover V8 Engines", is a real help for anyone getting started in this.
