All,
I'm about to send my Buick 300 crank out for machine work, and get
the journals turned down to fit a 3.9 block. I believe that I've read
that I should have between 0.001" and 0.0015" clearance between the
journal O.D. and the bearing I.D. Does this mean I should buy my
bearings first, torque them into the block and take an ID reading, or
are bearings made to such consistant tolerances that I can just go into
the shop and tell them the nominal journal diameter and expect them to
turn it to the right size with appropriate clearance? In other words,
if I take the crank into the shop and say "I need this ground down to
3.5 inches" will they typicaly know to turn it to 3.499"?
    Thanks, in advance!!!
James J.
