Well actually until the fuse pops the wire will get hot acrross its entire
length.    The reason for putting the fuse as close as possible to the
battery is to have as much of the wire protected by the fuse as possible so
that if it chaff's through then it will be protected.

OH, Good idea on the fuse,  a trick/tip I learned from some stereo guy; make
sure to put the fuse as close to the battery as possible.  Otherwise you
have a wire in the car getting hot or overloaded until the fuse pops..
better that overloaded section is as short as possible...
