Spark plug heat range

Any and all listers,

Please excuse my ignorance, I have worked with plug heat ranges as "Hot /
Cold" and the reading of plug color, but I am unfamiliar with the term "Soft /
Hard" when referring to heat range. Would someone enlighten me please?
