a hesitation just off idle can be from too much fuel, too little fuel, Ign
or even manifold vacuum problem. You say that you suspect too much fuel.
This is easy to ck. If it is an excess of fuel per air, it should get
progressively worse as the eng heats up and have a puff of black smoke out
the tail pipe on a quick throttle open off idle. (unless you are running a
catalitic converter)
A hesitation would lead me to ck for a lean condition first. a lean
condidtion usually improves as the eng heats up. This condidtion would be OK
while "on choke" as soon as the choke goes off you get the hesition and it
is not quite as bad when hot. This condition could be too low float level,
late acceleration pump setting or too lean on Idle mixture adjustment.
If you are running a vacuum advance dist. ck to see if you have no vacuum on
the hose at idle and do have vacuum just off idle. If so, remove and plug
the vacuum hose for a test run. If this cures the problem and the timing is
correct, get a vacuum delay valve and install it in the vacuum hose. Or just
put a small plug in the hose and drill a small hole in the plug so you
restrict the flow. You would want to experimant with different size holes to
see what works best.
