If your original pump is running, it is working just as hard as if it were
pumping all by itself and the points are burning as quickly. Both pumps
have check valves in them and will pump through the other pump if it is
not running. The modern pump is doing all the pumping because it pumps a
greater volume than the low pressure SU pump does, you could turn the SU
pump off and never see a difference (have you checked to see if the SU
pump is actually running?). Basically you have the same set up as what I
have written in my article on a permanently installed back up pump, except
you have not installed a switch to select one pump or the other.
