Thise problem is a common one. The key is not always a
tight fit, nor does it need to be. One solution is to put some heavy grease
in the slot before you
put the key in. The heavy grease will help to hold it in place. Make sure
that the key is fully pressed into the slot and flat, not cocked. Also make
sure that the keyway is clear with no burrs. You can use a small file to
clean the edges up if needed.

Slip the shaft into the hole a few times to make sure that there is no other
obstruction. Then put the key into the slot with a bit of heavy grease and
insert. (You may need to use a pair of pliers or similar tool to press the
key tightly into the slot. If you do so make sure you use a heavy rag around
the shaft so as not to make marks on the shaft.)

Sometimes it's helpful to hold the key down with your thumb to get it
started, then you may need to hold it down as you insert to keep it from
cocking.

After the first time it gets easier.
