I have a late TD with the clutch rod.  I also rebuilt another
early 52 TD with the rod set up.  I have never had any problem
with the clutch take up when everything was in good condition and
installed correctly.  I suspect you either had an adjustment
problem with the operating mechanism, the pressure plate wasn't
releasing properly, or oil or some other contamination on the
driven disk.
