I dropped the sump again just to check the alignment of the seal. It was ok.  
(I'm working with the engine still in the car.) I put a scissor jack under 
the sump at the end where the seal is to exert a little pressure. This wasn't 
enough, so I got out the old mallet. I was finally able to get the darn thing 
to seat, but I feel lucky something didn't break. If I ever replace that seal 
again, I'm going to find some softer cork!
