Terry,

I had more than my share of issues with the fuel switchover valves. I have a
few recommendations:

1) Be sure the bore in the body of the valve is EXACTLY 1/2" in diameter and
the Teflon/cork insert is sized to matched or a little bigger. NO SLOP is
allowed.

2) Consider going back to cork instead of the Teflon. Although the cork will
shrink when dry, it will also expand when wet. Therefore if you start with a
VERY dry cork (a wine bottle cork well aged works well) and cut it using a
carpenter's plug cutting drill of 1/2" in diameter, you'll wind up with an
insert the right diameter to begin with. Then a 45 degree slice and a 1/8"
center hole will make an ideal insert. Since it was sized dry, it has
nowhere to go but to swell when wet with fuel.

3) Be sure the pipe fittings that mate with the switchover valve are tight
and don't leak air. This is also true of any fittings between the valve and
the fuel pump. They MUST be leak free or it will suck air.

4) Before you try to get fuel to pass, remove the cork and let it sit in
fuel so it is lightly saturated. This will cause it to swell enough that you
will have an air-tight valve.

One or more of those suggestions has worked for me every time. You'll have
to repeat the process in the spring when the car has not pumped fuel for a
long time.

Cheers,
Lew Palmer

Thanks to Terry Andrews, I can report that the original Bonora cap does
infact have a vent drilled in it. It is drilled at a 45 right through the
spine of
the pivoting top....hard to see unless you know its there. Borora's were
original on the N types.

Now how to stop the reserve valve to stop leaking air........!
Terry
