When the grey hairs arrive, the mind leaves--between the basement (where the
car is) and the loft (where the computer is), the brain substituted "switch"
for "light socket."  What I meant was that the 2 warning light sockets had
lost their wrapping!

In any case, the answer seems to be that it's meant to cut the current down so
that a 6-volt bulb can be used.  Since 12-v. bulbs are easier and cheaper to
get, it would seem logical to forget about getting the sockets re-wrapped and
just use 12-v. bulbs.  (Maybe they'd even be brighter--the fuel light is hard
to see on a sunny day with the top down and very dark sunglasses on....)
