That thread is 5/16 Whitworth. If you're desperate you could use UNC (the
TPI is the same but the thread angle is different so it's not good practice)
but the hex will look wrong 'cos it's a different size across flats.
Sorry can't provide detail of the style of nut. Since it's hidden under the
bonnet it may have been a plain nut.
