I've never heard of trunnion tubes 'tearing open' or needing a 'heavy duty'
tube.

The only problem related to the trunnion setup is that when people neglect
to lube them, the spring saws through the top bush and then through the top
of the chassis tube. Hence the repair tubes that are available.

Keep greasing them and they last forever - well almost. We've been driving
the J2 since 1966 on the same trunnions: I just replaced them a few weeks
ago.
